If I had 99 problems, finishing the Cape Epic is not one. This year Clement and I finished 99th overall, just breaking into the top 100. I completed my Amabubesi + 1 and Clement got his Amabubesi stripes, and we both agreed this was our toughest Cape Epic yet.
This year we danced with the wind twice, got baked by the heat like ginger-bread men and finished with one and a half legs; it was a test of its own. I was also supposed to mentor Clement through this year’s Cape Epic, but for a day or two I think I was the one being schooled. It was good to see him grow every day from my constant shouting haha. He even said he was surprised I still had my voice after Stage 1.
Stage 6 for me was one of my best highlights; I think it was equally balanced with a fair amount of single track and climbing, and considering I was going to drop out of the race because of my knee it made the day even more worth it. Thanks to Erica Green for giving me advice on changing my pedal stroke to use my core more so I lessen the pain in my knee.
Well now it's time to get ready for this year’s racing season; the Epic was a good platform to get my head back into racing. I had amazing fun and created a lot of memories with Clement and the team. The next time I'll be doing the Epic I'm hoping to be starting and racing amongst the best in the world.
Thanks to Absa and Diepsloot MTB Academy for the opportunity to do another Absa Cape Epic; thanks to the HPC, TUKS Sport and my coach Devlin Eyden (who completed his 1st Absa Cape Epic this year) for helping me with preparations and supporting me throughout the race; thanks to Shaun Peschl and the Kargo Pro Cycling Team.
