My name is William “Weeleeyum” Mokgopo, also known as the #SkinnyHulk.
I’m a 26 year-old mountain biker, student and motivational speaker from Diepsloot; most people recognize me by my warm smile and skinny legs.
I aspire to motivate people with my story; I am passionate about finding new talent and mentoring them through the process of achieving their goals and dreams.
I have been cycling for just over a decade now. My love for cycling was uncovered in 2006 at a project called “Earn-a-Bike”were kids in my community were taught how to build a bicycle. Once complete, I was allowed to keep the bike as my own and this was my first mountain bike.
I was then introduced to Simon Nash aka “Super Madala”, who took me under his wing. Mr. Nash is the founder of the Diepsloot Mountain Bike Academy, the project where I got my start in competitive cycling.
My first big break came when I rode the Absa Cape Epic in 2012. I have completed the race a total of six times and I won the Exxaro Development Jersey with Philemon Sebona in 2017. In 2014 I was a rider for Team Absa alongside former pro-cyclist and Super Sport presenter, Owen Hannie.
In May 2014 I was signed by the Kargo Pro MTB Team, the first official UCI XCO MTB Team in South Africa, under the management of Peschl Sports. This was an exciting milestone in my career and a step closer to my ultimate dream.
I have been honoured to represent my country on multiple occasions at the UCI MTB World Championships (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017) and UCI MTB African Continental Championships (2014 & 2015). I have also represented TUKS Cycling at the Student MTB Cup, Varsity MTB Challenge and USSA Cycling Championships.
Mountain biking is not just a sport to me, it’s a way of life. Through the opportunities I have received and the lessons I have learnt, I have realised that you can have a successful future if you work hard enough for it. Sport gave me hope and a positive outlook on life.
Through motivational speaking, I want to impart the lessons I’ve learnt to younger kids. I want them to see that with hard work and determination, you can rise above your circumstances and achieve your dreams, no matter where you’re from.
My current goals are to complete my degree, to be an Olympian, and to be the founder of the first all-black pro MTB team in South Africa.
I’m just trying to prove that anything is possible. Thanks for following me and supporting me on this journey.
The Will.
