SA National XCO Cup Series #4 PMB and USSA Tour
25 June – 4 July
What a week it was for me at the end of June. In between being sick, I was preparing for the final SA XCO Cup, studying for exams, and managing other external things- I really needed to get my head in the right place.
First things first, I had to finish my exams and pass, so my books became a very close, but quiet friend to me. We spent hours together like a married couple where divorce is not an option! I had 3 exams to write – 2 on the Wednesday and the last one on Thursday before I left for PMB. In the end they all went very well, I guess the “marriage” was worth something after all haha.
The problem was that I missed two days of training, and just as I thought things couldn’t get any worse…
After finishing my last paper, I had to deliver my gear for the USSA Cycling Tour (University Sports of South Africa) and then take the Gautrain to OR Tambo International Airport. Murphy’s Law, the Gautrain had its issues with cables that day and I missed my flight. So I was booked on the standby list; I didn’t make it onto the next flight, but my luck turned at the last minute and I was the only one who got onto the second flight, whew! This now meant three days of training gone and I was starting to get a bit worried.
Friday I did two laps of the course and an hour ride. On Saturday I was ready to go- I didn’t feel my best, but I had to ride my best at all times. I finished 14th Elite Men. ‘Til next year…
Then I had to make the drive back to Johannesburg to catch a 5:45am flight the next day to Cape Town for the USSA tour- I was broken, only four hours sleep and then on my way to be a “roadie” for a week.
Road racing is quite tactical compared to MTB, I can’t deal haha! I enjoyed the experience; it was challenging because it was my first road race, but I had a good time with the TUKS Cycling team. The last two days I finished 6th on the circuit, as well as on the hill climb. Right at the end was the MTB XCO race where I finished 2nd. It’s been real haha!
Thanks to everyone who supported me when things were going a bit south for me. The road winds uphill but I keep climbing.
@KARGOPROMTBTEAM “the A team” and @TuksCyclingClub, thanks for this continuous journey.
